Bernie, Trump, and the Loss of the Middle Class

I almost completed a good, long intro to this post, weeks ago, but it was erased by an unexpected "refresh" by my NoScript. I will probably write something similar to it later. The gist of it was - is - that the long-degenerative economy, correlated to the sucking of wealth to the "upper" 1%, has given rise to something which I called, "The New Middle." NPR recently did some stories on this, using the same term(!), but it failed to take account of the political dynamics behind the declining middle class.

The New Middle is a populist, uncertain uprising of those who have been marginalised by the failing economy... )

July 30, 2016: Hillary's Convention Con - by Ralph Nader...

The 2016 Democratic Convention in Philadelphia was a multi-layered, raucous display of political theater. A host of delegates loyal to Senator Bernie Sanders were inside in large numbers exclaiming “No more war” during former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta's speech and raising all kinds of progressive, rebellious signs and banners against the Hillary crowd. Although Hillary addressed them directly in her acceptance speech, “Your cause is my cause,” those dissatisfied delegates in the hall saw her rhetoric for what it was: insincere and opportunistic.

She said she’d tax the wealthy for public necessities, but declined to mention a sales tax on Wall Street speculation that could bring in as much as $300 billion a year to support such initiatives. She opposed “unfair trade agreements,” but remarkably omitted saying she was against the TPP (the notorious pending Trans Pacific Trade Agreement backed by Obama that is receiving wide left/right opposition).

She paid lip service to a “living wage” but avoided endorsing a $15 an hour minimum wage, which would help single moms and their children – people she wants us to believe have been her enduring cause. Few people know that it took until the spring of 2014 before candidate Clinton would come out for even a $10.10 minimum wage. News reports noted that Clinton, a former member of Walmart’s board of directors and Arkansas corporate lawyer, was wrestling with how to support $10.10 per hour without alienating her Wall Street friends.

“Caring for kids” doesn’t extend to encircled Gaza’s defenseless children, hundreds of whom were killed by American-made weapons wielded by the all powerful Israeli military. Gaza is the the world’s largest open air prison and under illegal blockade. Remember, as Secretary of State, Hillary fully backed war crimes, condemned by almost all countries in the world. On the stage in Philadelphia, she spoke of backing Israel’s security without any mention of Palestinian rights or the need to end Israel’s illegal occupation of the territories.

Pardons on Assange - and Snowden - being blocked!

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange prepares to speak from the balcony [Feb.5?] of the Ecuadorian embassy, where he's lived since 2012.

Court won't drop Julian Assange rape investigation

CBS: STOCKHOLM -- A Swedish appeals court on Friday upheld a detention order for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, dismissing the latest attempt by the 45-year-old Australian to make prosecutors drop a rape investigation from 2010.

The decision by the Svea Court of Appeal means that the arrest warrant stands for the 45-year-old computer hacker, who has avoided extradition to Sweden by seeking shelter at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London since 2012.

Assange, who denies the rape allegation, has challenged the detention order several times. He says he fears he will be extradited to the United States to face espionage charges if he leaves the embassy.

His Swedish defense lawyer, Per Samuelson, said he would appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.

The End of the American Dream and Beyond

From social to economics to politics, to climate and earth changes, the end seems near for centuries of progress...

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0322/2477/products/corp_flag_1024x1024.jpg?v=1448499510
... and for decades of trickle-down, debt-induced delusion.  As we progressed, we sold out, and off-shore. To the banks and mega-corps. Now we daftly agree to disagree, and disagree, and disagree... Meanwhile, leading economic indicators continue to point to one thing: A growing bifurcation between the now-poor middle class, and the corporate elites, who eat our land, and weather, and taxes, and health, and wealth - and play left against right, and so on. And the mega-media likes it this way: Manufacturing consent, and fear, and false flags, and war. Is this what we bargained for?

So - I put together an awkward little compendium of articles relating to the faltering of our drunken journey to OZ, especially as of late - and to come. Pedantic economics, mainly. Let's start with an article from late 2014, when times were simpler, and most people had never heard of Bernie Sanders...

7 facts that show the American dream is dead - and other ominous articles... )

Note: I have less or worse to say about the Status-Quo Republicans.

How about that TPP? Just say, "NO!"

The TPP or Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement would effectively institutionalize the worst working and environmental conditions currently present Third World countries. And if a government passed an OSHA type law to improve working conditions, the government, aka, taxpayers, would have to pay for facility upgrades!!!

The Bernie Manifesto: "Here's what we want."

Bernie Sanders states the goals of the movement - in the often unfriendly Washington Post...

Here comes California!

Many, if not most of you, probably want to see Bernie Sanders win.  So, before the next primaries tomorrow, here's your chance to check out  [livejournal.com profile] bernie2016! And all my efforts linked over at [livejournal.com profile] liberal_plus. Thanks!

On the Ballot ! - "End Corporate Rule. Legalize Democracy" - (x-post)

Vote to Overturn Citizens United on April 5 in Wisconsin!

[March 28, 2016] - Besides the one for President and for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, there will be another important vote to cast on April 5 in 11 Wisconsin towns or cities. And that’s to vote to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s horrendous decision in the Citizens United case back in 2010 and to proclaim, once and for all, that corporations aren’t persons and money isn’t speech.

Such a resolution is on the ballot in Belmont, Beloit, Brodhead, Clarno, Darlington, Janesville, Lancaster, Monroe, New London, Platteville, and York.

The Citizens United case said that corporations, unions, and other associations can spend unlimited amounts of money to elect candidates of their choice. And it contained two of the most naïve statements ever written in a Supreme Court decision:

“Independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption,” and, “The appearance of influence or access, furthermore, will not cause the electorate to lose faith in our democracy.”

In the last five years in Wisconsin, resolutions to amend the Constitution to overturn Citizens United have passed by overwhelmingly margins in 61 villages, towns, cities, and a few counties in Wisconsin. That makes Wisconsin one of the leaders in the nationwide movement to get money out of politics.

The mainstream media is ignoring this movement. But it’s growing fast.

MOVE TO AMEND in your home town! - "We the People, Not We the Corporations"

And thanks to Bernie Sanders for infusing energy into campaigns against corpocrat personhood; money-speak; the $15 minimum wage; for extinguishing the TPP; for taxing the so-called "upper" 1%, and for giving the majority of Americans a fair shake at obtaining a decent and free life in these maddening times. I would feel remiss without also thanking the phenomenal Donald Trump for, somewhere behind his narcissistic tantrums, cobbling together an alternate rebuke of the Establishment*, which rejects the TPP, and some other dreams shared in common with Bernie, although one could hardly guess it from the media coverage.

LJustice - ?

madman101 (moderator) cannot log into his journal.

his LJ password was lost when his laptop was destroyed.

his associated Yahoo email/ address was earlier deleted by Yahoo, due to inactivity.

therefore, there is no way to log in to LJ at the moment, since the email is needed to confirm.

there was a chance that a new yahoo account could be created under the same, old name. however, that Yahoo email username has already been taken - which is strange.

the worst part of all this is that LJ has not responded to a letter sent by mail, giving all sorts of info, including the credit card number used by the LJ madman101 account!

this credit card number has recently been renewed.

so, I'm sure that LJ will be very happy to continue to charge that card, for an account which it won't allow the user to access!

Dear Senator: WE WILL NOT RE-ELECT YOU !

The outrage is that Congress is pushing ahead the TPP, selling us all into economic slavery. Please contact your Senators and demand that they stop!

As of 2:15pm, Chicago time, there is only a few hours left to make the call, before the vote is taken. If there is no immediate backlash, the vote is going to pass.

The immediate situation is this: The TPP has already been passed - but it depends on whether the TPA now passes in the Senate, in a few hours from now.

The TPA, ("Trade Promotion Authority"), is necessary to, "Fast Track," the TPP, i.e., ram-rod it through Congress for its final vote, with no changes by Congress.

SO: The important thing is to stop the vote on TPA - ASAP!

Please call your Senators!!! Yell bloody hell! Or try the polite approach:

202/224-3121 Senate / House public switchboard

(NOTE: The Democrats, supported by Progressive conservatives, managed to stop the TPP from going through - UNTIL the passage of the TPP yesterday. They voted against a (TPP) "pro-jobs" bill, because to do so would head off the TPP at the pass. But, now with the TPP being passed, guess what is happening?

(Obama is telling Democrats, "The TPP is on my desk, and I AM GOING TO SIGN IT. So - now you MUST vote for the (red-herring) pro-jobs bill, or else be blamed for the eventual JOBS failure of the instituted TPP).

I hope I am not confusing you. There is a lot more to the story - all about deception and coercion, and duplicity, kissing up to secret corporate campaign doners.

The main thing is: It all depends on today's vote on the TPA in the Senate!

March on MONSANTO

Tens of thousands march worldwide against Monsanto and GM crops

The Guardian (May 24 2015): The third annual March Against Monsanto – begun by the Occupy movement – was held in around 400 cities in more than 40 countries from the Americas to Africa and Europe.

About 2,500 people staged anti-Monsanto protests in the Swiss cities of Basel and Morges, where the company has its headquarters for Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Up to 3,000 protesters, rallied by environmental organisations including Greenpeace and anti-capitalist group Stop TAFTA, gathered in Paris, with Monsanto’s market-leading herbicide Roundup the main targets of protesters’ anger.

The controversial product’s main ingredient was recently classified as “probably carcinogenic to humans” by the World Health Organisation.

“Looking for mass suicide? Go for Roundup,” read one placard at another French protest in the western city of Rennes.

Homeless in Detroit

Remember when cities were coming up with the most obscure, niggling little ordinances to get OCCUPY protesters off of park properties, etc.? At least there is a little bit of compassion peeking up in Detroit...

“They’re not breaking any laws that are violent in nature or effecting quality of life issues,” Woody said. “If they did want to leave, we would help them with what resources we could muster, but discussions may need to be had soon in finding them something a little more permanent.”

Tent city springs up in shadow of downtown Detroit

The city’s homeless numbers swelled over the past decade as manufacturing and other jobs disappeared and homes were lost during the national foreclosure crisis. About 16,200 of Detroit’s 680,000 residents — almost 2.4 percent — are believed to be living on the streets or in temporary shelters.

HORRIFIED

We need to refer to the Omnibus Spending Bill, now in the Senate, as the FRANKENSTEIN BILL. Because that's what it is. A monster of many deadly parts.
